The Mourela Plateau is one of the best places for birdwatching in the National Park. Located in the extreme northeast of the National Park, at an altitude of over 1000 metres, the Mourela Plateau is dominated by typical mountain scrubland, dotted with large rocky outcrops, peat bogs, small agricultural areas and some areas with small woods in the lower areas.

Here you will find unique conditions for observing some mountain bird species. Surrounded by an agricultural mosaic, the villages of Pitões das Júnias and Tourém offer an extra touch of diversity in the observations of the different species.

The existence of mountain rivers, reservoirs, and peat bogs, among many other ecological niches, are just some of the habitats that can be found here and which we invite you to discover.

Bird species

Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Bluemouth Tortoise (Circus cyaneus), Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio), Bonelli’s Flycatcher (Phylloscopus bonelli), Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus)
