The Grande Route 50 Peneda-Gerês is one of the biggest pedestrian routes in Portugal, with the particularity that it develops entirely in a mountain zone. Its first stage starts in Ameijoeira, Castro Laboreiro, and ends in Tourém, after crossing the National Park, in the municipalities of Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro and Montalegre.

It presents a diversified itinerary regarding the landscape, culture and ways of life of the communities that have inhabited this territory for several centuries. The GR50 crosses medieval cobblestone streets, paths between brandas and inverneiras, shepherds’ roads, mountain meadows, pilgrims’ roads, and smuggling routes, among other marks of the past and of current experience.

Stage by stage, the landscape changes its features. There are several natural habitats, and biodiversity sanctuaries, where important species of Portuguese flora and fauna are to be found. At higher elevations, the view is lost on the horizon.
